Helping Parents Build Early Reading Skills with Confidence

Did you ever wonder, “How do I teach my child to read at home?”

Did you wish you had a clear blueprint—simple, proven steps you could follow without guessing or feeling overwhelmed?

Most parents want to support early reading but aren’t sure where to start or what actually works. That’s exactly why Jumpstart Kinder exists.

Jumpstart Kinder’s early literacy program is designed to build confident readers from the ground up by focusing on the most important pre-reading skills children need before kindergarten—including phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and early decoding.

Meet the Early Literacy Expert Behind Jumpstart Kinder

I’m L.T. Lyles, the educator and literacy expert behind Jumpstart Kinder, a parent-led early literacy program designed to help families build strong reading foundations before kindergarten.

With over 30 years of experience as a classroom teacher and literacy consultant, I’ve dedicated my career to discovering the most effective ways to teach children to read.  I’ve learned that parents want to know “At what age should a child start learning to read?”

The answer, backed by research and experience, is clear: the earliest years—ages 0 to 5—are the most powerful window for building language and reading foundations.

Children don’t need formal lessons at this age—but they do need intentional, developmentally appropriate instruction that aligns with how the brain learns to read.

I created Jumpstart Kinder out of a simple need: to give my own grandson the strongest possible start on his reading journey.

I wanted a kindergarten readiness program that showed parents how to help toddlers and preschoolers develop early literacy skills naturally—through phonemic awareness, phonics, play-based activities, and meaningful reading experiences taught in a logical, sequential order. When I couldn’t find a resource that combined all of this for parents, I built it myself.

A Proven Method for Building Early Readers

The result?  By 2 ½ years old, my grandson wasn’t just memorizing—he was truly reading. He was:

This isn’t magic. It’s method. And it’s a method proven in my classroom with hundreds of students.

Many children struggle with reading not because they aren’t capable—but because they haven’t been taught the foundational early literacy skills in a clear, explicit, and developmentally appropriate way during the years when learning happens fastest.

Jumpstart Kinder closes that gap by giving parents a simple, step-by-step blueprint for teaching reading at home, even if they have no teaching background.
